Early Spring Morn

The sun creeps up in an early-spring morn
Icicles drip-dripping, weak and well-worn
Sun wrestling to wake, after sleeping such time
Birds hailing the spring in their sing-song chime

Yet once again, frost finds its way to the window
Birds’ lonely songs from a lone farmhouse spindle
Clouds furious, raging, devouring more
Snow turns to rain, helpless to springtime’s door

Ice is again melting, losing the battle
Birds question their song, are they beloved or chattel?
Sprouts peeking their noses from a frost-bitten ground
Birthing beauty beneath, without ever a sound

We wait, oh, we wait, will you not come, dear spring?
With days full of sunlight, what joy shall you bring!
Days yearning for laughter of children outside
Pregnant blossoms of spring, please open wide
