Ode to the Unwanted Daughter
❤︎
Some of us have known mothers who should not have been mothers.
Here is that mother personified. Not personal reflection, but a fictional observation of humanity’s often disquieting behaviour.
I walked along the blanketed road
Silent night of fresh-fallen snow
Rare moment of hushed, muted sounds
It should be peaceful, but it wasn’t so
Beside me walked my little girl
Her father’s pride – the reason he ignored me
Anger spiked, despite the peace
Red hat bobbing as she talk, talked at me
Tensing, I tried to ignore her, gritting my teeth
My anger rising in this starry night’s glow
Coiled contempt – if she would just shut up…
How did I deserve this? I did not know
She starved for my attention, a smile, a hug
Anything other than the nothing I gave
Her eyes were innocent, wide and hopeful
But love for her? Buried deep in a grave
Why me, God, why? I could not stand her
I could not love her, did not even try
At night, she sat quietly, crying in her bed
Begging, why doesn’t she sleep? God, why?
Happy voice, eager eyes and rosy cheeks
Everything about her is cuter than perfection
Freckled nose and thick black lashes
She did not need my love or my protection
Her father loved her; they had each other
I resented them both from my core
If only I could get away from her
To find peace and love once more
